Organic vs Non-organic

I can’t believe what I have just read on the wonderful soil association’s website (http://www.soilassociation.org/Whyorganic/Health/tabid/59/Default.aspx).

Apparently the FSA had recently (July 2009) published an “organic review” claiming that there are no benefits to be gained from eating organic food! I can’t believe that a government body can be so irresponsible (actually maybe I can), how can they claim something like that, they seem to be completely ignoring the fact that most effects on health caused by pesticides, herbicides and insecticides are all LONG-TERM!

Not to mention what the effect of this awful method of farming is doing to our environment!

I was very pleased to read the Soil Associations response to the report: “We are disappointed in the conclusions the researchers have reached. The review rejected almost all the existing studies of comparisons between organic and non-organic nutritional differences…”.  They also went on to question the fact the report “failed to include  the results of a major European Union-funded study involving 31 research and university institutes and the publication, so far, of more than 100 scientific papers, at a cost of 18million Euros, which ended in April this year.

The European Union research programme concluded that:

  • ‘Levels of a range of nutritionally desirable compounds (e.g. antioxidants, vitamins, glycosinolates) were shown to be higher in organic crops’
  • ‘Levels of nutritionally undesirable compounds (e.g. mycotoxins, glycoalkaloids, Cadmium and Nickel) were shown to be lower in organic crops’.”

This all saddens me so much as we are once again being fed information that we are just supposed to take as fact, when the proper research and investigations where not done in an adequate manner!

ARGH!!! Ignorance makes me SO mad (and deeply disappointed)

Chiropractic care

The beginning of my journey to health started with my 1st chiropractor visit.

Before going I always used to think that all chiropractors did was make sore backs feel better…oh how wrong I was! The medical definition of chiropractic (thanks to www.medicinenet.com) is: A system of diagnosis and treatment based on the concept that the nervous system coordinates all of the body’s functions, and that disease results from a lack of normal nerve function. Chiropractic employs manipulation and adjustment of body structures, such as the spinal column, so that pressure on nerves coming from the spinal cord due to displacement (subluxation) of a vertebral body may be relieved. Practitioners believe that misalignment and nerve pressure can cause problems not only in the local area, but also at some distance from it.

I now that all sounds a bit like gobbledy gook but basically as we all now from shool biology, our brain controls everything in our body. It does this through our nervous system which runs through our spine. When a vetebrae moves out of place it can block one of these nerves from sending and recieving messages properly causing certain parts of our bodies to not function in the correct way resulting in sickness and disease!

I have always suffered from really bad headaches and thought it was just something I have to put up with… But after only a few treatments I have already started to notice quite a difference in the severity and frequency of my headaches! It’s truly amazes me that we are always being encouraged by our doctor and the government to get medical check-ups or dental check ups but never have I been encourgaed to get my spine checked, yet it is truly a very important part of my body’s overall function and health.

I can definitely say that I will always make chiropractic care my main form of healthcare from now on and would like to encourage you to visit your local chirporactor to get your spine checked and talk to them about your overall health and lifestyle!

(if anyone would like information of a good chiropractor in your area just let me know and I will send you some details)

How it all Started

I am a very average 26 year old girl, I live in London and recently got a new job in an awesome chiropractic office in Fulham.

I always used to think I was pretty healthy, I’m not a sickly person, I eat pretty well (or so I thought) and even though I don’t exercise alot, I would like to think I am pretty active! Well that is what I thought until I started my great job with 2 really great chiropractors. They have really made me question not only my health but my whole outlook towards my health, not in a bad way but more in the way that I used just accept what people tell me about my body, health etc without doing my own research…

So basically I am now taking a journey to review, evaluate and change the health and the lifestyle choices I make from day to day and invite you to question, change or assist me on this exciting and hopefully interesting  JOURNEY TO HEALTH…
